CHAPTER FIFTEEN

“Oh little girl. Get up, get up,” Polly sang out as she knocked on Rebecca’s door Monday morning.

“It’s vacation. Why can’t I sleep in?”

Polly opened the door. “We talked about this yesterday. I have a quick meeting at Sycamore House and I need you to keep an eye on the boys. Hayden and Cat are on their way to Boone.”

“It’s not fair,” Rebecca whined. “Every day I get up and go to school. Never a break. Now on my first day of vacation, I still have to get up.”

Polly laughed. “Whining is not going to make this any easier. Get yourself out of bed. I’m leaving in ten minutes. If you aren’t downstairs, I will unleash horrific things upon you.”

Rebecca sat up, rubbing at her eyes. “You would, too, wouldn’t you?”

“I don’t know. Test me to find out?”

“Not today,” Rebecca said. “But can I sleep in tomorrow?”

“You’ll have to see what Cat has going on. I’m meeting someone tomorrow morning and then Wednesday I’ll be at the hotel.”

“Thursday, then. For sure. Please?”

And just like that, summer vacation was underway.

The weekend had flown by. They hadn’t done anything more interesting than the wedding Friday evening, but here it was Monday morning and Polly felt her world lurching back to normal.

Nan was an easy houseguest — helpful when she was around, but that wasn’t often now that she and Grey were busy with their plans. They’d spent all day yesterday looking at houses and apartments and even beginning to sketch out a business plan for his practice. Nan was ready to take on the world for him.

She would ride over with Polly to Sycamore House and wait while Polly, Jeff, and Grey met to discuss his resignation and the transition. Then they would be off again. Even though it was Memorial Day, Jeff wanted to get this meeting out of the way so he could take the next few days off. He wasn’t planning to go anywhere, but they’d been busy enough, he was ready for a short break.

Cat and Hayden hadn’t been around much yesterday either. They had lunch with someone after church, which had been a fun experience for the young couple. People they barely knew, but who knew of them, spent the morning congratulating them.

Polly was doing her best to avoid visiting Sal. She’d called Saturday evening and they’d talked for a few minutes, but Sal was exhausted and ready to try to sleep while Theodore slept. Lila was in town and there had already been harsh words, according to Sal. She didn’t want to talk about it, so Polly let it go. She’d called again yesterday afternoon, knowing that Lydia was going to drop by with food for the young family. When Lila answered Sal’s phone, Polly had been shocked, then polite, and then she ended the call as quickly as possible. She hadn’t heard anything more from her friend, and that seemed like it could be bad. Polly knew she was going to have to suck it up and just go over there.
